The Senate took a monumental step today in rejecting the revival of the Fairness Doctrine. The Fairness Doctrine, which was repelled in 1987, required broadcasters to give coverage to all sides of an issue. While this may appear to be a good idea in practice, it is actually an affront to the First Amendment.
The Doctrine has been shunned by conservative talk show hosts and pundits alike as a liberal affront to their right to transmit their views across the public airspace. If reenacted conservative talk radio would be eviscerated. The stations that broadcast Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingram, Michael Reagan, and Sean Hannity would also be required to carry the likes of Rachel Maddow and Al Franken, frightening!
The 11 Senators that voted against the bill are a whose who of the American left, 11 in total:
Kerry, Harkin, Feinstein, Dorgan, Conrad, Johnson, Reed, Rockerfeller, Sanders(the only self-proclaimed socialist in the Senate), and Whitehouse
